01Key facts / TL;DR
It depends whether the remodel changes regulated components and what documentation the AHJ requests.
No, a kitchen or whole-house label does not create a separate remodel price menu.
Yes, new applicable residential report preparation uses the published area/unit tiers; revising an existing report is a different pricing decision.

Upload plans / Get a Quote02Do you need a new report at all?
A remodel can mean finishes only, altered windows, HVAC replacement, changed water heating or a substantially different building design. The name of the room does not establish the energy scope. Some work may need focused alteration documentation rather than a whole-building performance model; confirm the applicable requirement with the responsible team and AHJ.
Before ordering, ask what component changed and what certificate or evidence is missing. A contractor seeking an installation record and an architect needing design compliance are not asking for the same deliverable. An existing report may already cover part of the design, or it may no longer describe the proposal.
Send the existing/proposed drawings and any prior energy documents. Do not infer a permit exemption or report waiver because the work is called cosmetic, and do not purchase a complete model solely because a correction letter contains “Title 24.” Read the actual comment and identify its stage.

03New residential documentation uses the same menu
For a new report-preparation scope, the published residential tiers use conditioned square footage and dwelling units included in the request. They do not assign an automatic kitchen, bathroom, ADU or whole-house surcharge. Explain the areas and components being documented so the estimate has a supported basis.
Each additional dwelling unit beyond the first carries the published $75 supplement. A remodeled room is not automatically another dwelling. Where the project creates independent living facilities or changes building classification, have the actual scope and form family confirmed instead of deciding from a marketing label.
The calculator estimates new-report pricing from the inputs supplied. It does not decide whether the permit needs a model, whether a prescriptive alteration pathway applies or whether a request is actually a major revision to previously prepared work. Those distinctions need the plans and earlier package.
04Use the three revision tiers honestly
Our modeling/report error in city plan check is corrected Free. Supply the complete correction letter, reviewed drawings and report so the discrepancy can be identified. “The city commented” alone does not show that our report introduced the error or that the architectural design remained unchanged.
Architectural/design changes after the report are $75 flat. This covers that published revision category, not an unlimited redesign promise. Explain the changed sheets, assemblies, equipment and scope rather than forwarding an unmarked replacement PDF.
A full remodeled model or larger resubmittal needing a rebuilt energy model is custom, with intake required. Major redesigns must not be described as the flat architectural revision simply because the permit number is unchanged. The distinction is about the actual model work, not the label placed on the email.

05Illustrative example: window change versus model rebuild
ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY: after a report is issued, an architect changes the window schedule. The applicant supplies the earlier package, revised schedule and affected sheets. The preparer reviews the supported new glazing data and determines the documentation changes; this is not automatically our modeling error.
A different revision replaces the building layout, expands the scope and changes several systems, requiring reconstruction of the energy model. The applicant selects the major-redesign/custom-quote path rather than assuming the architectural flat fee buys a full rebuild.
A third comment identifies a value incorrectly transcribed into our report from the unchanged supplied schedule. That is the kind of our-error discrepancy the Free correction tier addresses. These examples illustrate scope categories; they do not adjudicate a real dispute or guarantee a particular compliance result.
06The remodel intake packet should show changes
Prepare existing/proposed plans with revision clouds or a clear change log, affected window/door schedules, assemblies, insulation and HVAC/hot-water intentions. Include the previous energy report and all plan-check comments if one exists. Mark retained components so “existing” does not become an unsupported assumption about performance.
Record the reviewing agency and AHJ-confirmed permit-application date. The 2025 Energy Code applies to applications on or after January 1, 2026; an older house does not automatically use an older code. Ask about amended plans, expired permits and new applications rather than treating a drawing date as controlling.
Identify whether you need an early options review, a permit design package or a correction. If choices are still provisional, say which ones. This helps scope the preparation task honestly without promising that an incomplete drawing set can support final documents.

07Production timing and excluded work
Residential rush is +$99 for next-business-day production after complete inputs. It is not unconditional 24-hour delivery, a city-review shortcut or a permit guarantee. Include the deadline and missing selections so the request can be reviewed accurately.
ECC field verification/field testing, nonresidential acceptance testing, registry/document-registration fees, CALGreen and AHJ plan-check/permit fees are separate. Installer CF2R certification and required ECC-Rater CF3R verification are not replaced by design-phase CF1R preparation. Older-cycle HERS language does not change those responsibilities.
The final request should identify the task and the responsible participants. Uploading plans is not payment or order acceptance. If the missing item is construction verification rather than a revised design report, clarify that before ordering duplicate documentation.
08Four remodel-cost questions
Is every remodel report a $75 revision?
No. The flat revision tier applies to architectural/design changes after a report. A new report uses the residential menu; a full remodeled model or major rebuild needs intake and a custom quote.
Is a city correction always our-error work?
No. Compare the comment with the supplied plans and reviewed report. Our modeling/report errors are corrected Free, while changed designs and major rebuilds have different scopes.
Does a kitchen-only project always need a whole-house model?
No universal requirement is stated here. Identify the actual altered components and requested documentation with the AHJ before purchasing whole-building analysis.
What should I upload for a revision estimate?
Send the prior report, reviewed set, revised drawings, change summary and complete comments. Make the differences visible so the revision is not quoted from an incomplete description.
09Turn the estimate into a scoped project request
